Cougars Need Extra Innings to Defeat UC Davis 8-6
May 26, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Zach Borba's RBI single in the top of the 12th inning scored Paul Gran and Jim Murphy added an insurance run as Washington State defeated UC Davis 8-6 in 12 innings in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. It was the second consecutive day the team teams needed extra frames to decide a winner as UC Davis won 2-1 Friday in 10 innings.
The win assures the Cougars of their second straight winning season, the first time since the 1993-94 seasons that has been accomplished.
While Borba provided the late-inning heroics, it was Connor Lambert who kept WSU in the contest after the Aggies jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Lambert entered the game with WSU trailing 6-1 with two outs and two on in the second. Lambert was almost perfect during his outing as he retired the first 21 batters he faced before allowing a two-out double to Michael Jacobellis in the bottom of the ninth. It marked the first Aggie baserunner since the second. Matt Dempsey, Friday's hero with the game-winning hit in the 10th, was then hit by a Lambert fastball before the Cougar freshman got out of trouble when Oliver's fly out to center ended the inning.
While the Aggies were held scoreless after the second, the Cougars chipped away at the lead, scoring two in the fourth, three in the fifth and the final two coming in extra innings. In the 12th Paul Gran led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and then scored on Borba's soft single to right. Borba stole second and one out later scored on a Jared Prince single to left for the final margin of victory.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first when Scott Suttmeier reached on an infield single. Suttmeier moved to third on a failed pickoff then scored on Gran's sacrifice fly to center.
UC Davis answered in the bottom of the frame as it strung together three hits to push two runs across the plate. The first run came via a wild pitch then Jacob Jefferies singled home Daniel Descalso for the 2-1 lead. The Aggies put up four more runs in the second, all coming with two outs. Brandon Oliver and Jefferies each had RBI singles and Aaron Hanke had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
WSU cut into the Aggie advantage in the fourth as Jim Murphy and Mike Gilbert each had RBI singles as UC Davis' lead was narrowed to 6-3. Three more runs in the fifth tied the game at 6-6 as Gran doubled home Suttmeier for the first run then Aggie starter Bryan Evans hit back-to-back batters with the bases loaded producing two more runs. The second hit batter ended the day for Evans as Trevor Fox came on to get out of the inning without further damage.
Cougar starter Jayson Miller did not make it out of the second as he left after 1 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits before giving way to Lambert.
Steve Kost entered to begin the 10th inning, ending Lambert's afternoon after going 7 1/3 innings, allowing one hit, no walks with six strikeouts. Lambert threw 69 pitches with 51 going for strikes. Kost picked up the win as he worked two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Seth Harvey picked up his first save as he worked the 12th, allowing just a walk before getting a fly out to left to end the game.
Suttmeier and Prince each had three hits on the day while Gran, Prince and Gilbert all had two RBIs.
Evans was staked to a 6-1 lead but could not hold on as he went 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits. He was the first of five Aggie pitchers on the afternoon with Marco Grifantini, who entered to start the 12th, suffering the loss. Offensively, Jefferies had three hits and two RBIs for UC Davis.
The Cougars conclude their 2007 season Sunday in the series finale against UC Davis. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
