Stanford Men Head East For NCAA Championships

CARDINAL MEN HEAD TO VIRGINIA: The nationally ranked Stanford men's golf team, seeded 12th overall, travels east for the 2007 NCAA Championships, May 30-June 2, to be hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va. The Cardinal are making their 10th appearance since 1990 and second in the last three years. For ticket information, please call the VCU ticket office at 828-7267.

PARTICIPANTS: The 30 squads participating in the team championship include Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Tennessee State, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Lamar, Louisville, Michigan State, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Southern California, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, Tulsa, UCLA, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Along with the 150 players from the above schools, six additional golfers will battle for the individual title, including Daniel Summerhays of Brigham Young, Kyle Stanley of Clemson, Chance Piptone of Pennsylvania, Zach Sucher of UAB, Tim Streng of Western Illinois and Dan Woltman of Wisconsin.

PAIRINGS: Stanford will be paired with Tennessee and Oklahoma State for the first and second rounds of competition ... They will tee off beginning at 1:17 p.m. on Wednesday and 8:07 a.m. on Thursday (all times EDT) ... Following the second round of competition, team score shall determine the pairings.

ABOUT THE COURSE: The Championships will take place on the Gold Course (par 70, 6,803 yards) at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va. ... Opened in 1963 and the work of Robert Trent Jones Sr., who called it his 'finest design,' this is one of the best examples of traditional golf course architecture in the world ... Past events include: U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship (June 22-27, 2004), Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship (August 2002, Green & Gold Courses), U.S. Kids Golf World Championship ( July 31 - Aug. 3, 2002) and the NCAA Division I Eastern Regional Men's Semi-Final Championship (Green Course, 2001).

HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Stanford men's golf team shot a 14-under par 274 on the final day of competition at the NCAA West Regional to finish seventh overall with a three-round score of 33-under 831 earlier this month ... Freshman golfer Joseph Bramlett fired a six-under 66 to move from 23rd into a tie for 10th individually with a three round score of 12-under 204 (71-67-66) ... Bramlett went four under on the back nine with birdies on 10, 14, 15 and 17 ... Teammates Daniel Lim (72-71-66) and Zack Miller (67-71-71) tied for 36th on the individual leaderboard with a seven-under 209 ... Senior Matt Savage tied for 53rd with a four-under 212 (70-71-71) ... Junior Rob Grube rounded out the list of Cardinal competitors, finishing tied for 71st at two-under 214 (69-74-71).

ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES: Five Stanford golfers received all-conference honors this season for their outstanding play on the golf course ... Seniors Zack Miller and Matt Savage, along with junior Rob Grube earned first-team accolades ... Freshman Joseph Bramlett was a second-team selection while Daniel Lim was an honorable mention selection.

RAY TABBED PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR: Stanford head coach Conrad Ray was tabbed the 2007 Pac-10 Coach of the Year in voting by the Pac-10 men's golf coaches ... Ray, in his third year as head coach, has directed a remarkable resurgence in Stanford golf. Stanford is currently the second-ranked team in the nation by Golfweek by virtue of winning six of the 11 regular season tournaments it entered this year, with two other runner-up finishes. The Stanford team victories came in the Gopher Invitational, The Prestige at PGA West, the Corde Valle Classic, the UH-Hilo Invitational, the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational and the U.S. Intercollegiate. Ray is a former player and team captain at Stanford and was a member of the Cardinal's 1994 NCAA Championship team.

CARDINAL NOTES: Stanford's six tournament victories is the most since the Tiger Woods era in the mid `90's ... The Cardinal team is one of the deepest in the country as three different Stanford golfers have won a tournament this year (Rob Grube, Zack Miller and Joseph Bramlett). Every member of the team has competed in an event this year ... The nationally ranked Stanford golf team won its sixth tournament of the season with a victory at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. ... Stanford has recorded six first place finishes, two second place finishes, one fourth place finish, two fifth place finishes and one seventh place finish this season.

THE LAST TIME: Stanford's last NCAA title came in 1994 in McKinnney, Texas ... The team of William Yanagisawa, Notah Begay III, Casey Martin, Steve Burdick and Brad Lanning recorded a team score of 1,129 to take top honors ... Yanagisawa finished tied for third at 11 under 277 while Begay tied for fifth at eight under 280 ... The Cardinal's last individual champion came in 1996 as Tiger Woods earned top medalist honors at NCAAs in Chattanooga, Tenn. (the team finished fourth that year).
