June 6, 2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Several members of the Arizona State University track and field team opened competition at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday afternoon at the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Complex in Sacramento, Calif., with a handful of those athletes advancing to the finals of their respective events. No team has scored points in the championships yet with the first available points coming Thursday.

For the women, Tai Battle had a strong day in the field as she posted a mark of 53.69m (176-02) in the discus to place third overall and qualify for the finals. Her mark ranks as the eighth-best in school history and is a three-centimeter improvement on her personal best throw. Also in the throws, Sarah Stevens placed fourth in the hammer with a toss of 62.61m (205-05) to earn a finals berth as well. April Kubishta cleared 4.00m (13-01.50) to earn her berth in the finals as one of 16 women to clear the height.

Jenna Kingma advanced to the finals of the 5,000m run with her time of 16:28.02, qualifying her 12th in the event. Brooke Bennett ran the third-fastest time in school history in the 3,000m steeplechase at 10:08.47, but, unfortunately, it was not enough as she was 15th, the first person to miss the finals for the second year in a row.

On the men's side, three runners qualified to move on in their respective events, including the duo of Aaron Aguayo and Kyle Alcorn in the 3,000m steeplechase. Aguayo had the fastest time in the semifinal at 8:38.77 while Alcorn improved his personal best time to 8:40.13, the fourth-fastest in school history, to rank fifth in the race and advance with Aguayo to the finals. Jimmie Gordon advanced to the semifinals of the 400m dash as his time of 46.77 placed him 11th in the standings.

Action continues Thursday with Jacquelyn Johnson in the heptathlon, Kelvin Love in the 200m dash, Latosha Wallace in the 400m hurdles as well as the 4x400m relay with Bridgette Williams, Shauntel Elcock and Jordan Durham, Amy Hastings in the 10,000m run and shot put competitors Ryan Whiting, Stevens and Pressley.
