Lodree Leads Six of Nine Huskies Into NCAA Track Finals
June 6, 2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The busiest day of NCAA Championships competition in Washington track and field history proved almost entirely successful Wednesday, as six of the nine Huskies in competition advanced through qualifying rounds on the first day of the 2007 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento.
The four-day meet, featuring 12 Huskies in 14 different events, continues through Saturday at Sacramento State's Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.
Washington could up its qualifying total to seven, pending an appeal of a late disqualification of junior Carl Moe in the semifinal heat of the steeplechase. Seededjust 20th in the event, Moe placed fourth in Wednesday's semi-final round in a personal-best time of 8 minutes 41.45 seconds, and was initially announced as one of 14 qualifiers for Friday's final.
More than an hour after those results were initially posted, however, new results were posted indicating that the Husky junior had been disqualified for impeding two other runners on the final straightaway. That disqualification is under appeal, but due to the late hour of the change, will not be reviewed until Thursday morning.
If Moe's time holds up, it is a USA Championships qualifier and the fourth-fastest time in UW history - the fastest by a Husky since current UW head coach Greg Metcalf clocked 8:41.17 in 1992. Moe would also be guaranteed his third-career All-America honor, and his first in an individual event.
'Hopefully our appeal will be granted tomorrow morning and Carl will get to run in the final like he deserves,' Metcalf said after learning of the protest. 'He was fantastic tonight - he ran great and looked smooth over the hurdles. I'm excited to see what he can do in the final.'
Not including Moe's performance, six Huskies were successful in qualifying efforts Wednesday. Seniors Ryan Brown (800 meters) and Ashley Lodree (100-meter hurdles), and junior Alex Harcourt (400 meters) each qualified out of preliminary heats in track events, while senior Martin Bingisser (hammer), junior Norris Frederick (long jump) and freshman Scott Roth (pole vault) advanced to field-event finals.
In addition to her participation in the hurdles - which required the senior to run two heats - Lodree also competed in qualifying rounds of the long jump, sandwiched in between the hurdles preliminary and semi-final rounds.
Forced to scratch her first long jump attempt to participate in the hurdles prelim - which she coasted through without any trouble - Lodree dashed back over the long jump pit for her final two attempts, ultimately placing 16th at 20 feet, 2 ½ inches, just shy of a berth in Thursday's final.
The senior had little time to rest, however, with the hurdles semifinal scheduled for just 45 minutes later. If the extra workload took anything out of her, though, it didn't show in the hurdles, as Lodree blazed through the semi in 13.07 seconds, fourth-fastest among all finals qualifiers and just .01 off the top qualifying time of 13.06 seconds.
In fact, all nine finals qualifiers clocked times between 13.06 and 13.10 seconds in Wednesday's semifinals, setting up one of the most closely-contested hurdles finals in NCAA history. Lodree placed fifth in the hurdles final in 2005, and was seventh in 2006.
Washington will have seven of its 12 qualifiers in action Thursday, which will include finals of the men's long jump, semifinals of the men's 800 meters, men's 4x400-meter relay and women's 1,500-meter run, and preliminary heats of the men's 400-meter hurdles.
