Shay Comes Home!
June 6, 2007
USC's Shay Murphy will be making her debut at the Staples Center this week. Now a member of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx, Murphy is coming back to town for a pro clash with the Los Angeles Sparks in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Friday (June 8). Her USC teammates, coaches and friends are already on board to support Murphy - ready to see her compete in L.A. wearing colors other than Cardinal and Gold.
Murphy was the 15th pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft in April, following a stellar career at USC. She ranks as the Trojans' all-time leading 3-point shooter and has now taken her skills to the pro ranks. She's played in six games with the Minnesota Lynx so far this season and is averaging 3.8 reounds and 2.7 points per game in just under 10 minutes per game. Most recently, she grabbed a pair of rebounds in three minutes of action during Minnesota's first win of the year on Tuesday vs. the Phoenix Mercury. Murphy has become the 11th USC athlete to play in the WNBA and was the seventh Trojan to be selected in the draft.
The Lynx's Friday showdown with the Sparks would have presented a clash of two Trojan titans, as Murphy would have come up against the Sparks' three-time MVP Lisa Leslie. Leslie is sitting out the 2007 season, however, to give birth to her first child, so Murphy will be the lone Trojan on the court at Staples on Friday evening. Murphy's first official points of her pro career (scored during the regular season) were actually against former Trojan Ebony Hoffman's Indiana Fever on May 29, when Murphy nailed three free throws. Murphy's first career 3-pointer came against the New York Liberty on June 1 when she played a career-high 18 minutes and scored 11 points to set a new high mark for herself in the pros.
It may not be the Galen Center, but Murphy is all set to hit the courts in Los Angeles once again this week. Come out to the Staples Center on Friday (June 8) at 7:30 p.m. to catch the Minnesota Lynx's visit to the Los Angeles Sparks and catch Shay back in action in Southern California!
