Wright, McPherson Advance in High Jump at NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO - California junior Ed Wright and sophomore Inika McPherson each tied for first place in their respective high-jump qualifying rounds to advance on Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.
McPherson is tied with 10 others for the lead in the women's high jump with a mark of 5-10.75 (1.80 meters), while Wright tied for the lead with 15 others with a mark of 6-10.75 (2.10). The men's high jump final is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday. McPherson vies for the national title at 5 p.m. on Friday.
In the women's 800-meter run, Golden Bears junior Alysia Johnson ran a 2:05.99 to win her heat of the preliminary round and advance to the semifinal. Her time tied as the fifth fastest of the day. The 800 semifinals are scheduled to start at 5:05 p.m. on Thursday. Cal sophomore Mackenzie Pierce was 27th in 2:18.74 and did not reach the 800 semi.
Cal senior Kelechi Anyanwu posted the fourth-best discus throw, with a 174-6 (53.19 meters), in the qualifying round to advance to the final at 3:15 p.m. on Friday. Sophomore teammate Emilee Strot placed 24th with a throw of 153-7 (46.82) and did not advance.
Bears sophomore Steven Conrad stands in seventh place after five events of the decathlon. Conrad, who took third in the 100-meter dash (wind-aided 11.03) and third in the 400-meter dash (lifetime-best 48.64), has a current score of 3,844 points. The decathlon will continue at 10 a.m. on Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles.
Senior teammate Carrie Johnson advanced in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 203-9 (62.11 meters) to take seventh in Wednesday's qualifying round. The final is slated to start at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Bears senior Kevin Davis ran an 8:41.56 to place ninth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase prelim and qualify for the final at 7:10 p.m. on Friday.
Senior teammate Giliat Ghebray, an All-American in the men's 5,000-meter run last year, placed 23rd in this year's 5,000 semifinal with a time of 14.44.01 and did not advance to the final. He ends his college career ranked third in the 5,000 on Cal's all-time list with a time of 13:42.16 he ran at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational.
Cal junior Thomas Mack advanced to the semifinal of the non-decathlon 110-meter hurdles by running a 13.90 and taking 14th place in the prelim. Later on Wednesday, he ran a lifetime-best 13.74 in the semifinal but placed 11th and did not advance to the final.
Bears junior Brook Turner ran a 55.08 to take 28th in the women's 400-meter dash prelim. She did not qualify for the semifinal.
The NCAA Championships resume tomorrow starting with the decathlon events.
