Conrad Takes 11th in Decathlon at NCAA Championships

June 7, 2007

SACRAMENTO - California sophomore Steven Conrad took 11th place with a lifetime-best 7,245 points in the decathlon on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium. Also today, Golden Bears junior Alysia Johnson ran the fastest time in the semifinal of the women's 800-meter run to advance to Saturday's final.

On Thursday, Conrad's best finish in the five remaining decathlon events was ninth in the javelin with a throw of 180-8 (55.08 meters). He also tied for 12th in the 1,500-meter run (4:37.63), tied for 15th in the pole vault (14-1.25, 4.30 meters), tied for 19th in the discus throw (119-7, 36.44) and took 21st in the 110-meter hurdles (15.87).

Johnson, this year's NCAA indoor champion in the 800, clocked a 2:02.73 to edge Michigan's second-place Katie Erdman (2:03.60). The 800 final is scheduled for 10:28 a.m. on Saturday.

Cal junior David Torrence just missed a spot in the men's 1,500-meter run final, taking 13th place in the semifinal in a time of 3:43.43. Only the top 12 advanced to the final.

The Cal women's quartet of junior Brook Turner, sophomore Mackenzie Pierce, sophomore Evelyn Smith and sophomore Kandi Bonty also missed a spot in the final of the 4x400-meter relay. The Bears ran a 3:36.10 to place 18th in today's semifinal. The time does rank the foursome as the third-fastest 4x400 relay on Cal's all-time list.

Bears sophomore Emilee Strot recorded a toss of 49-6.25 (15.09 meters) to finish 19th in the women's shot put qualifying round but did not advance.

The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow. Cal senior Carrie Johnson will compete in Friday's first event, the women's hammer final, which starts at 11 a.m. Bears will take part in four other events on Friday: Junior Cassandra Strickland will compete in the qualifying round for the women's triple jump at 3:15 p.m., senior Kelechi Anyanwu will vie for the women's discus title in that 3:15 p.m. final, sophomore Inika McPherson will challenge for the women's high jump crown at 5:15 p.m. and senior Kevin Davis will run in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase final at 7:10 p.m.
