Seven Rowers Land on Pac-10 All-Academic Teams
June 7, 2007
Los Angeles, Calif. - Seven UCLA rowers earned spots on the Pacific-10 conference women's rowing All-Academic teams, the commissioner announced this week. The student-athletes garnered this recognition by maintaining a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average while contributing significantly to their program. Three Bruins also earned honorable mention recognition.
Of the seven total student-athletes honored, five were named to conference's the first team. The team is lead by senior starboard rower Elizabeth Lee, a three-time CRCA National Scholar-Athlete, who earned her third consecutive All-Academic accolade, her second on the first team. The senior biology major, a member of the last three varsity eight appearances at the NCAA Championships, registered a 3.6 GPA.
Joining Lee on the first team is senior co-captain Leah Wachtel. Having earned two previous second team honors, Wachtel makes her debut on the first team this year. Earlier this month, Wachtel's 3.54 GPA was good enough to also earn her CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honors, another first for the senior political science major. Wachtel stroked her second varsity eight boat to victory against USC this year.
Fellow co-captain Erin Rice also landed on the first-team after her selection on the second team last year. Rice made sure that her bump up to the first team would come by earning a 3.42 GPA this year as a political science major. Rice anchored one of the best second varsity eight boats in the conference this year.
After having earned second team honors last year, senior coxswain Megan McQuown made her first team debut. McQuown finished the year with a 3.54 GPA as a linguistics major. The coxswain also led the second varsity crew all year against tremendous competition.
The final member of the first team for UCLA is junior Jennifer Weber. Not to be outdone by the seniors who had all earned previous honors, Weber registered a team high 3.76 GPA to earn her first All-Academic accolades. The psychology major was a constant fixture on UCLA varsity four attack in only her second season of competition.
The All-Academic second team was headlined by senior Brittany Merchant for the second consecutive year. Merchant, a comparative literature major, earned a 3.29 GPA this year. She was also rowing with the second varsity eight crew who took down USC this spring.
Joining Merchant on the second team is junior Erin Haggerty. Although a constant fixture on the Director's honor roll at UCLA, Haggerty had only garnered an honorable mention last year. With her repeated excellence as a history major, earning a 3.18 GPA, Haggerty makes her first All-Academic second team appearance. The Bruin's varsity eight success this year was in no small part due to Haggerty's efforts.
Three Bruin rowers also earned honorable mention recognition. Junior transfer Vanessa Jansen, junior standout Maida Habibovic, and freshman Lynette Thompson all earned honorable mentions for the first time.
