European Vacation: Seeing The Best In Switzerland

June 6

Diane Copenhagen

This morning we woke up early for our four-hour to drive to Switzerland. To help the time pass, we watched movies, listened to music, and slept. The drive through the Alps was incredible. We really enjoyed the huge snow covered mountains and the little towns and vineyards in between them.

We finally pulled up to our hotel which was just one block from Lake Geneva. After we settled into our rooms we took a team walk around the lake for lunch. Following lunch we all broke off to discover and explore Montreaux. We walked around, shopped, and took several pictures.

Later that evening we met up at the tournament to watch Serbia vs. Russia. It was really exciting to see national teams compete at such a high level. Then we made our way back to the hotel because we have an early wake up call before our only practice scheduled in Switzerland.

It's one of the last days of our trip and we are starting to get a little bit tired. The travel and the volleyball as been incredibly fun, but it's finally starting to take the normal toll on our bodies. Today we spent more time just relaxing than normal.

Our 6:30am wake up call led us to our 7:00 am breakfast and then to a quick 8:00am practice at an elementary school here in Montreaux. Following practice, we just all hung out around the hotel and started some movies. Diane (Copenhagen, Jessica (Gysin) and Bethany (Johansen) took advantage of the crystal clarity of Lake Geneva and enjoyed a refreshing swim. Contrary to our initial belief, the water temperature was actually tolerable.

We met for lunch at noon near the Volleymasters Arena then everyone scattered into small groups for several different activities. One group headed east toward Lausanne where the International Olympic museum is placed. This beautiful tiny town is also known for some wonderful shopping, which the group also took advantage of. On the way back from Lausanne, the driver took the scenic route up through the vast mountain vineyards. It was a beautiful view that high where it seemed like they could see 50 miles of coastline on the near side and the entire Lake Geneva coastline across the lake in France.

Alli (Hillgren) and I went to a restaurant on the lake and enjoyed a pizza and huge bowl of ice cream with strawberries. Everyone else just ended up taking naps on a day where we finally had an opportunity to do felt great!

We all got back together at the venue for the 6:30 match between China and Cuba. We were full of 'ooohhhhs' and 'aaahhhhhs' as we watched Cuba jump out of the gym and crush balls. During the match we enjoyed the flavors of Europe at the food court having kebob sandwiches, ice cream, coffee, and the most amazing food I have ever consumed....CHOCOLATE WAFFLES. It's doughy inside and chocolately outside. It just melted in my mouth. I went to be completely content after that!

Tomorrow is our last day. We will play a match against the National Team of Switzerland then have a 'Bon Voyage' dinner with the team. It will be a day to remember after a trip to cherish.
