USC Has A Big Day At The USA Track And Field Championships

USC's Lionel Larry in the 400m and Duane Solomon in the 800m recorded personal-best times today (June 22) to advance to finals at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held in Indianapolis, Ind.
Larry, who placed second at the 2007 NCAA Track and Field Championships in the 400m race with a PR of 44.68, bettered that today with a new best of 44.67 to place second in his heat and post the third-fastest qualifying time for tomorrow's finals. His time improved his third-place standing on USC's all-time 400m list.
Solomon, a seventh-place finisher in the 800m race at the 2007 NCAA Championships, also set a new PR today with a time of 1:46.57 to place second in his heat with the third-fastest time of the day to advance to Sunday's finals. Solomon, whose previous best time of 1:47.19 was set earlier this season, improved his standing on USC's all-time 800m list from eighth to fifth.
Kate Hutchinson, who redshirted during the 2007 NCAA season, placed 14th in the women's discus competition with a throw of 165-4 (50.40). Hutchinson is the USC women's record-holder in the discus, with a mark of 189-5 (57.73m) on May 6, 2006.
Trojan Candice Davis, who placed second in the 100m high hurdles at the 2007 NCAA Track and Field Championships, ran a 13.20 time in the sprint hurdles today to take third in her heat and qualify for tomorrow's semi-finals. Winning Davis' heat was former Trojan and 2005 and 2006 NCAA Champion in the 100m HH Virginia Powell, who posted the fastest time of the day at 12.79.
Among the other Trojan students and former athletes competing well today include Torri Edwards in the women's 100m (1st - 11.02), Alison Felix in the 100m (4th - 11.25) and Kevin Elliott in the 800m race with a new PR, just missing the finals. Also recent Trojans Alexis Weatherspoon in the women's 100m and Garry Jones in the men's 100m dash reached today's semi-finals, but did not qualify for the finals round.
Also today in Indianapolis at the Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, incoming Trojan freshman Bryshon Nellum won his 400m heat with a time of 46.40 to advance to tomorrow's finals. Nellum, who yesterday was named Gatorade National Track and Field Athlete of the Year, had the fastest qualifying time today.
Sarah Cocco, who will attend USC this fall, placed third in the junior women's 800m race with a time of 2:06.70, with just .54 seconds separating the top three finishers. LSU freshman Latavia Thomas won with a time of 2:06.16.
Trojan freshman Myra Hasson placed second in her heat of the junior women's 400m race with a time of 56.03, but did not qualify for the finals.
Fall incoming freshman Lauren Guerrieri placed 13th in the junior women's discus throw competition with a toss of 143-5 (43.72m).
