Rhonda Watkins Wins Trinidad and Tobago Long Jump Crown
June 24, 2007
Sophomore Rhonda Watkins continued her incredible second season at UCLA over the weekend as the 2007 NCAA indoor and outdoor long jump titlist won the long jump crown at the Trinidad and Tobago National Championships.
Watkins, who is the National record holder in the long jump, posted a mark of 20-6.50 to easily win her first senior national title (she won both the high and long jump junior crowns in 2006). Her nearest competitor had a mark of 18-2.50. She will now join seven other Bruins at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan in late August, including fellow sophomore teammate Nicole Leach.
'I'm disappointed, but grateful that the injury to my right ankle was not aggravated,' said Watkins. 'All in all, at least I didn't make anything much worse than it was before. I just have to move on from here.
'It's special in that you get to come home and win in front of people you know. In terms of that it is still a special feeling.'
Watkins has been nursing an ankle injury she sustained while warming up for the high jump at the NCAA Championships. She will only compete in the long jump this summer. Watkins will head to the PanAm Games next month before competing at Worlds.
