TEMPE, Ariz. -

Arizona State University graduate safety Josh Barrett has been named to the 2007 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, an honor presented to college football's top defensive player, Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced Monday.

After leading ASU with 82 total tackles and three interceptions as a junior last season, Barrett earned honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference recognition and was named the Sun Devils' Most Valuable Defensive Player of the Year.  The Reno, Nev., native enters 2007 as one of the top safeties in college football, having already been named to the Lott Trophy and Nagurski Award Watch Lists. An excellent scholar-athlete, Barrett earned first-team Pac-10 All-Academic in 2006 and will be one of eight Sun Devils on the 2007 roster to have already earned his undergraduate degree.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame 69' and the NFL Hall of Fame 67'.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced in early November and three finalists will be announced on Nov. 26. The winner of the 2007 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6, 2007. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City in March 2008.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2007 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.
