Barboza, Akinradewo to Compete in Pan Am Games

Stanford, Calif. - Rising juniors Cynthia Barboza and Foluke Akinradewo have been named to the US National Team roster for the upcoming Pan American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The Stanford players were among 12 players named to the roster.
The United States is part of Pool B and opens group play on July 14 against Costa Rica at 1 p.m., followed by a July 15 match against Puerto Rico at 1 p.m. The U.S. concludes pool play on July 16 against Cuba at 7 p.m. Semifinals and classification matches are on July 18 after an off day, followed by the championship on July 19.
Barboza is among six players on the squad who also competed in the recent Pan American Cup, leading the team to a fourth place finish. The outside hitter was also a member of the 2005 Pan Am Cup team and played on the 2003 Pan Am Games US team that earned a bronze medal. Akinradewo competed in the 2005 Pan Am Cup. Both players were First Team All-Americans for the Cardinal in 2006, leading the team in kills and blocks, respectively.
The U.S. Women's National Team has secured the gold only once at the Pan American Games, in 1967 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Team USA also has six silver medals and three bronze medals to its credit.
