Five Former Bruins To Play In MLS All-Star Game
July 10, 2007
Five former UCLA stars have been named to the 2007 MLS All-Star team, including starters Jonathan Bornstein (2004-05), Jimmy Conrad (1996-97) and Matt Reis (1994-97). Also on the team are Kevin Hartman (1995-96) and Cobi Jones (1988-91).
The MLS All-Stars will face Celtic FC on July 19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and Telefutura at 6 pm PT.
Bornstein, a defender with Chivas USA, earns his first All-Star selection a year after his sensation rookie season, during which he was honored as the MLS Gatorade Rookie of the Year after leading all rookies in scoring with six goals. Bornstein is now a fixture with the U.S. National Team and helped lead the U.S. to victory at the Gold Cup in June.
Conrad, a defender with the Kansas City Wizards, is also a fixture with the U.S. National Team, having played at the 2006 World Cup. Conrad, the 2005 MLS Defender of the Year, has earned Radio Shack Best XI honors the past three seasons. This is his fourth consecutive and fourth overall selection to the All-Star team.
Reis, a goalkeeper with the New England Revolution, has been selected for the third consecutive season. Last year's Soccer America MLS 'Keeper of the Year is currently tied for the League lead with five shutouts and is tied for second with six wins. Reis led the League in shutouts and saves in 2005 and 2006.
Kansas City goalkeeper Hartman, who was one of All-Stars Coach Steve Nicol's reserve selections, has been named to the All-Star team for the fifth time in his career. Hartman is the League's all-time leader in wins and shutouts and was the 1999 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
Soccer icon Cobi Jones of the Los Angeles Galaxy was one of MLS Commissioner Don Garber's two picks. Jones, a midfielder in his 12th and final season in MLS, is the only player in the League who has played all 12 MLS seasons with the same team. This is Jones' ninth selection to the All-Star team.
