Twelve Straight: Stanford Makes Another Appearance on the Nordic Cup Roster
July 11, 2007
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford's Rachel Buehler, who has been a U.S. Senior National Team pool player since last summer, was named to the 18-player U.S. U-21 squad this week that will travel to Vaasa, Finland for the 17th Annual Nordic Cup being held July 18-24.
Stanford has had at least one player on the Nordic Cup squad since 1996. Buehler, along with 2005 grad Nicole Barnhart, helped the U.S. to its seventh-consecutive Nordic Cup title with a 4-1 win over Norway in 2005. Last summer, Buehler led the team to a silver medal, as the team dropped its first title game since 1997 to Germany, 2-0.
Buehler, who will return for her fifth year at Stanford in 2007, was the anchor of the Stanford defense in 2006, leading the team to one of the top-10 shutout percentages in the nation (.652), with 15 on the year. She also helped the team to one of the lowest goals-against averages in the nation (.55) and captained the squad that advanced to the NCAA Third Round. The Del Mar, Calif. native enters the Nordic Cup with 14 U-21 caps.
Held in Northern Europe every summer, the USA has competed in the Nordic Cup for more than a decade, during which time it has become the focus of the USA's oldest youth national team during its six-month run-up to the prestigious competition. In response to FIFA moving its oldest FIFA youth world championship for women from Under-19 to Under-20, this year the Nordic Cup moves from an Under-21 competition to an Under-23 tournament.
The U.S. roster features numerous players with extensive youth National Team experience, as more than half the team has represented the United States in a FIFA youth world championship. Buehler is one of seven players on the roster with Nordic Cup experience.
The American women open play against Norway on July 18 in Narpio, followed by a match against Sweden on July 22 in Vaasa. The placement matches are on July 24. All the matches are in and around Vassa on the west coast of Finland right on the Gulf of Bothnia.
The USA has won eight Nordic Cup titles, including seven in a row before falling last year in the championship game to Germany. The USA won the last Nordic Cup contested in Finland in 2002, defeating Germany, 3-1 in the final.
