Charli Turner Thorne Elected to Women's Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors

July 12, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State head women's basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne was one of three newly elected members to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Board of Directors, according to a recent announcement by WBCA incoming President and University of Oklahoma head women's basketball coach Sherri Coale.

Made up of 28 coaches and professionals, the WBCA Board of Directors develops policies, procedures and regulations for the operation of the organization. They also monitor the organization's financial health, programs and overall performance and provide the chief executive officer with the resources to meet the needs of those the organization serves.

'I'm very flattered to be elected by my peers to this prestigious position,' said Turner Thorne, who later this year will be entering her 12th season at ASU. 'Although we sometimes find ourselves competing against one another on the court, at the end of the day every coach on every level is dedicated to the same goal and that is the continued growth and development of girls' and women's basketball. I'm looking forward to contributing anyway that I can while at the same time being able to team up and share ideas with some of the most respected coaches and professionals in the sport.'

The all-time winningest coach in the history of the program, Turner Thorne has led ASU to the NCAA Tournament five times in the last seven seasons, including the last three in succession. This past season the Sun Devils set single-season school records for most overall wins (31), most Pac-10 wins (16) and most road wins (10) on their way to their first ever berth in the Elite Eight. ASU's final No. 8 ranking in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll was its highest finish in school history.

Earlier this week Turner Thorne returned from the FIBA U21 World Championship in Moscow, Russia, where she served as an assistant coach on the U.S. U21 World Championship Team, which captured the gold medal.

Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls.
