Tony Bennett's Talks About the USA Men's Basketball Pan American Games Team.
July 16, 2007
NOTE: Washington State guards Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver are among 14 finalists for the 2007 USA Men's Basketball Pan American Games team. The 12-man roster is expected to be named by July 19. Cougar Head Coach Tony Bennett was at two of the workouts before the team roster was trimmed from 30 to 14. These are his thoughts.
I had the privilege of watching the first two sessions of the Pan American trials. It was a proud moment to see Derrick and Kyle there, and it was a joy to watch them compete. They were two of 30 top college players in America invited. Seeing two Washington State University student-athletes wearing USA jerseys gave me chills. These two young men are representing their families, the University and Cougar Nation. It was an extremely compeititive setting with these 30 elite players vying for spots on the 12-man team. Add to that every NBA team having a scout present, and I believe you can get a feel for the level of intensity in the building.
After observing the two sessions, it is apparent to me there is not a lot of separation between these players, so the selection process will be extremely difficult. Certainly, we all hope they both make it, but regardless of the outcome, this is an amazing experience Derrick and Kyle will remember for life.
I believe it will be invaluable to their continued development as basketball players and as young men. As I started this letter, I will end it; it was a proud moment to be a Coug.
