Andy Grant Earns Silver Medal At 2007 Pan American Games

First Day Final Results

The first set of finals at the Pan American Games concluded this morning in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Stanford swimmer Andy Grant earned a silver medal as part of the United States' 800 meter freestyle relay team.

The team of Ricky Berens (1:48.61), Matthew Owen (1:48.91), Grant (1:47.91) and Robert Margalis (1:49.57) grabbed silver in a time of 7:15.00. Grant recorded the third fastest 200 meter split of the race.

Brazil's quartet of Thiago Pereira (1:48.63), Rodrigo Castro (1:49.38), Lucas Salatta (1:47.63) and Nicolas Oliveira (1:46.63) demolished the Games record with a time of 7:12.27. The previous standard of 7:18.93 stood since the United States set it on Aug. 12, 2003.

The Canadian contingent of Chad Hankewich (1:49.76), Stefan Hirniak (1:50.04), Pascal Wollach (1:49.63) and Adam Sioui (1:48.30) garnered bronze in 7:17.73.

Current Stanford swimmer Chris Ash and former swimmers Peter Marshall and Randall Bal will also be competing throughout the 2007 Pan American Games.
