Thomas Abercrombie and Aron Baynes to Participate in World University Games

Competition will take place August 7-18 in Bangkok, Thailand. Abercrombie, a guard who used his redshirt with the Cougars in 2006-07, will play for New Zealand. Baynes, a center and two-year member of the WSU basketball team will compete for Australia.
'With Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver representing the USA in international competition and now to have Thomas Abercrombie and Aron Baynes represent their countries in international competition is an honor for them and our Cougar basketball program,' WSU Head Coach Tony Bennett said. 'The experience Thomas and Aron will gain will be beneficial for their development as players and will provide great memories in their basketball careers.'
There are 24 countries divided into eight groups of three teams each taking part in the men's basketball event. New Zealand has been placed in Group A with Thailand and Canada. Australia is in Group H with Korea and Israel.
New Zealand will take on Canada, Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time and Thailand, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. PDT in preliminary group competition. Australia plays Korea, Aug. 7 at 2:30 a.m. PDT and Israel, Aug 10 at 1:45 a.m. PDT.
Other entries include the United States, Lithuania and Angola in Group B, Ukraine, Japan and Brazil in Group C, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Mexico in Group D, Russia, Finland and Chinese Taipei in Group E, Germany, Greece and Kazakhstan in Group F and Turkey, China and the Republic of South Africa in Group G.
Results of the preliminary group competition will determine the match-ups for the second and third phases which run through Aug. 16. Fifth through 24th place will be determined Aug. 17. The final and third place game will take place Aug. 18.
