Samaniego and Schofield Shine at Senior Zone D Diving Championships
July 23, 2007
Marisa Samaniego and Tess Schofield had a successful competition over the weekend at the Senior Zone D Diving Championships as both notched wins in their respective events. Samaniego won the one meter contest, while Schofield was victorious on the tower event.
Samaniego won both the quarterfinal/prelim one meter round (233.50) before winning the final with a score of 245.40. She also finished fifth in the final of three meter (224.25) after having finished third in the quarterfinal/prelim (225.95).
'Although she was first after the prelims, Marisa did a lot better in the final,' said dive coach Tom Stebbins. 'It was great to see because she was really relaxed and in total control. She really appeared to be in control and relaxed all weekend long and we have been working on that.
'Marisa did pretty good again on 3M and that was encouraging because she didn't dive particularly well. She missed some dives, but we've put some new ones in her dive list and she's working through them.'
Schofield won the tower event with a new personal-best score of 299.05. On one meter, Schofield just missed a spot in the final with her 13th-place finish in the quarterfinal/prelim round with a score of 190.55.
'This was a big one for Tess because we've been working real hard at getting to the 300-point mark,' added Stebbins. 'Today we went 299.05 and that's pretty high for a kid at this stage in her training.'
Shannon Pirozzi also had a strong weekend as she advanced to the first senior final of her career. On three meter, Pirozzi placed 13th in both the quarterfinal/prelim (198.70) and final rounds (183.95). She also just missed a spot in the final of one meter, as she finished 14th in the quarterfinal/prelim round (184.50).
'It was great to see Shannon make the final,' noted Stebbins. 'She snuck in there and did a pretty good job in her first major final.'
Also at the meet, Brittany Hill finished 23rd on three meter (173.00) and 27th on one meter (156.00).
Morgan Erpenbeck, who redshirted last season after undergoing wrist surgery, competed in her first meet since before the surgery at the Zone A Championships in Boyds, MD. Erpenbeck was 20th on three meter (177.90) and 22nd on one meter (180.30).
'Morgan's competition went relatively well considering the short amount of time she's been bakc training. It's good to see her out there competing after having to sit out last season.'
Samaniego and Schofield will next head to the National Diving Championships (held at Stanford) next week as both secured automatic spots for the meet with their wins.
