Seven Huskies to Compete at U-23 World Rowing Championship
July 25, 2007
SEATTLE - Seven University of Washington athletes, including four members of the national champion varsity eight crew, will compete at the 2007 World Rowing Under-23 Championships that begin Thursday.
Several Huskies seek to repeat as gold medalists at the annual FISA regatta, which this year is scheduled for July 26-29 in Strathclyde, Scotland.
Serving as the coxswain for the United States' women's eight is Katelin Snyder (Winter Park, Fla.), who completed her sophomore year by directing the Husky men's varsity eight to the national championship. Snyder coxed the American women to the gold medal at the 2006 U-23 championships.
Among the rowers in the top U.S. boat is Andrea Sooter (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian), a member of UW's women's varsity eight during the 2007 season.
A third Husky on the U.S. roster is junior Jessiah Johnson (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), who rowed in UW's national champion varsity eight. Johnson is in the U.S. men's eight crew that will be coached by Michael Callahan, who was recently appointed the Husky men's head coach after three years as the freshman coach.
Johnson rowed for the Callahan-coached U.S. eight that placed fifth at the 2006 U-23 regatta in Belgium.
The defending men's eight championship crew hails from Canada. Half of the rowers from last year's victorious crew were Huskies, including Will Crothers (Kingston, Ontario), Max Lang (Lumby, B.C.), Chris Aylard (Victoria, B.C.) and Rob Gibson. All but Gibson return to defend their U-23 title. In his place is UW junior Stephen Connolly (Calgary, Alberta).
The Under 23 event has been in existence for 30 years. Held for the first time in 1976 in Macon, France, under the title 'Seniors Match' it eventually became the 'Nations Cup' in 1992. FISA's 2005 Extraordinary Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia, voted to upgrade the World Rowing Under 23 Regatta to the World Rowing Championships status.
Under 23 rowers raced under the FISA flag for the first time in 2004. With the annual participation of approximately 40 countries and 600 athletes, the world of rowing is looking forward to watching Under 23 rowers in the build up to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
