USA Drops Pan American Games Men's Basketball Opener

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Esteban Batista tallied a game-high 25 points and Nicolas Mazzarino added 21 points to lead Uruguay past the United States 81-72 in the Pan American Games opener for both teams, Wednesday.

Washington State's Kyle Weaver started for the USA, scored four points, and added two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Weaver's Cougar teammate Derrick Low did not play.

The Americans were led by 14 points each from D.J. White and Maarty Leunen. The USA led 38-37 at halftime, but was outscored 26-20 in the third quarter and trailed 63-58 heading into the final stanza.

Uruguay led the United State 72-69 with 3:47 to play before closing the game with a 9-3 run on the strength of six points from Batista.

The United States will continue Group B play with a 3:45 p.m. PDT game, Thursday against Panama. ESPN Deportes will air the game live with pregame coverage beginning at 3:30 p.m.
