Hicks To Play Professional Hoops In Switzerland
July 26, 2007
SEATTLE -- Former Washington women's basketball standout Cameo Hicks has signed a one-year contract to play professionally overseas with Universite BC Neuchatel in Switzerland for the 2007-08 season.
Hicks, a two-time first-team All-Pac-10 honoree who graduated from the UW Business School in June, will depart for Switzerland on September 1. She will join former Husky teammate and 2006 UW graduate Kristen O'Neill who currently plays in the professional ranks overseas in Spain.
'I am extremely excited about playing overseas in Switzerland,' Hicks said. 'I am getting the best of both worlds; playing professional basketball as well as getting to experience beautiful countries and different cultures. I will definitely miss my family and all of the comforts of home, but this is a once in a lifetime experience that I did not want to pass up.'
Hicks was a four-year starter and led the Huskies to two NCAA tournament appearances during her tenure. She finished her career 11th on Washington's all-time scoring list with 1,472 points and her 74 double-figure scoring games tied for fourth in program history. Hicks was a preseason candidate for many top national awards prior to her senior year, including the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. A three-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree, Hicks was also a 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar and a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second-team selection.
Hicks and O'Neill are among a long list of former Husky women's basketball players to continue their playing careers in the professional ranks whether in the United States or overseas. In addition to O'Neill, 2006 graduate Nicole Castro also played professionally in Germany for the 2006-07 season. 2004 UW grads Andrea Lalum and Giuliana Mendiola played professionally in Athens, Greece for one season following their UW careers, while 2003 grad Alicia Heathcote played a two-year stint in Germany, as well.
