Lawrie Leads Canada To Pan Am Semifinal With Shutout Against Venezuela

SEATTLE-- Washington junior Danielle Lawrie threw a complete game, three-hitter vs. Venezuela Thursday en route to the 1-0 eight-inning victory to propel the Canadian National Softball Team into the semifinal of the Pan Am Games. Canada advances to face the United States Friday with the winner advancing to the gold medal game. The loser will have to play the winner of today's Cuba/Venezuela game for a chance to compete for the Pan Am Championship, which is set for Saturday.

After the first two days of competition were cancelled due to in climate weather, Lawrie and the Canadians finally took the field Thursday in a double header vs. Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The Canada defeated Puerto Rico 6-3 in the opener before Lawrie earned the 1-0 win against Venezuela behind a seven strikeout performance.

Canada scored the game-winner in the eighth inning when Melanie Matthews singled to score Erin Cumpstone.
