Stanford Women's Swimming Affiliates Conclude First Day At 2007 Summer Senior Nationals

The 2007 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships began today, as several Stanford women's affiliates turned in strong finishes in their event finals. The competition runs Tuesday-Saturday, July 31-August 4 in Indianapolis, Ind.
In the 200 meter butterfly finals, Whitney Spence earned an eighth place finish in the C-Final as she posted a time of 2:19.22. Kathleen Hersey took the overall top spot as she recorded a winning time of 2:07.19.
The 200 meter breaststroke finals saw two Stanford affiliates post solid finishes. Tara Kirk earned a second place finish in the B-Final, as she touched the wall in a time of 2:29.83. Caroline Bruce took second in the C-Final as she posted a 2:33.11. Rebecca Soni claimed the title as she set a meet record, and just missed the American record, with a time of 2:23.62.
In the 800 meter freestyle, Elizabeth Durot led the way for the Stanford affiliates. Durot posted a 45th place finish as she recorded a time of 8:56.28. Whitney Spence was at it again, competing in her second final of the evening. Spence earned a 50th place finish with her time of 8:57.75. Kate Ziegler took the title as she posted a time of 8:22.33, just ahead of second place finisher Katie Hoff (8:22.80).
'It was a good start to nationals, our swimmers performed well,' said head coach Lea Maurer. 'We are looking forward to the next four days of competition.'
