Jensen Second In U.S. Summer Nationals 400m Free

Led by a second-place finish by recent graduate Larsen Jensen, three former Trojans all reached the final of the 400m free on the third day of the 2007 U.S. Summer National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., on Thursday (Aug. 2).

Jensen, who was second in the 1500m free on Tuesday, finished second in the 400m free in 3:47.08. Peter Vanderkaay won the race in 3:45.55.

USC grad Erik Vendt, who won the 1500m free and was second in the 400m IM (an event in which he has two Olympic silvers), took fifth in 3:47.53 while his former college teammate, Klete Keller, was sixth in 3:52.83. Jensen, Vendt, Keller and Vanderkaay were all teammates on the 2004 U.S. Olympic swimming team.

Another former Trojan, Mark Warkentin, was 20th in the race in 3:56.62.

Senior-to-be Whitney Hentzen led three current Trojans in the 400m free, finishing 53rd (4:21.52). Brittany Allen and Kristina Rigterink also swam in the race.

On Wednesday, Hayley McGregory, who will also be a senior this fall, reached the semifinals of the 200m back and finished 12th in 2:14.60.

Also, former Trojan Gabe Woodward earned a berth in the semifinals of the 100m free and took 16th (50.67).

Among the other current Trojan swimmers who are competing at the Summer Nationals are Katy Houston, Bryce Elser, Ankur Poseria, Kazu Miyahara, Tyler Schlenker and Brandon Lovell.

The meet continues Friday and Saturday (Aug. 3-4).
