Cal Tennis Gets Set for 2007-08 Season

Berkeley - The University of California tennis program will start the 2007-08 campaign with its Men's and Women's Tennis Season Kickoff Banquet Friday, August 31, at the Berkeley Tennis Club. Golden Bear tennis hall of famers will be honored at the function.
The banquet begins at 4 p.m. with an exhibition by the men's and women's teams. Following the exhibition will be a dinner and a program to honor hall of famers, Lisa Albano, Richard Bennett, Thomas Brown Jr., Edward G. 'Bud' Chandler, Marty Davis, Hugh Ditzler, Chris Dunk, Anne McCune, Helen Hull Jacobs, Matt Lucena, Clifton Mayne, Dr. Paul Newton, Barrie Bulmore Ornstil, John Ricksen, Rupert Ricksen, Helen Willis Roark, Gene Smith, Tom Stow, Gerald Stratford and Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman.

Two Sundays this fall, Cal will hold the second Peter Wright Tennis Tour Sept. 16 and Oct. 21. The event will feature juniors, college players and men's open players competing against one another in a unique one-day, one-set singles and doubles tournament at Cal.
A compass draw will be used. Entries close at 9 a.m. on the morning of the tournament and play will begin almost immediately. Draws will be limited to 16 players.

The women's team kicks off its season Sept. 28, when the Bears host the Cal Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Center. The competition will feature top women players from around the country and admission is free.
The season opener for the men's team will be Sept. 7 at the Residential Pacific Mortgage Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, Calif. The three-day singles and doubles challenge will feature some of the country's most talented collegians from Cal, North Carolina, Georgia and USC. On Friday and Saturday, the action runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Sunday's competition begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 12 p.m. Admission is free.
