2007 Pac-10 Volleyball: Stanford
Aug. 8, 2007
Last season, the Cardinal captured their 10th Pac-10 title and went on to reach the NCAA Championship finals for the 12th time in school history. The key to Stanford claiming the Pac-10 crown in 2006 was having five returning starters, which included three AVCA All-Americans. Could it be de ja vu for the Cardinal in 2007 as once again they return five starters, of which three are All-Americans - Foluke Akinradewo, Cynthia Barboza and Bryn Kehoe?
Balanced with All-Americans at setter with senior Bryn Kehoe (13.39 assists per game) at outside hitter with junior Cynthia Barboza (4.21 kills per game), and at middle blocker with Foluke Akinradewo (1.44 blocks per game).
Kehoe was instrumental in guiding the Cardinal offense to a Pac-10 best .288 hitting percentage. Stanford's eight returning letterwinners combined for a .316 attack percentage.
Akinradewo, who also contributed with 3.90 kills per game, teams with senior Franci Girard (2.04 kills per game/0.89 blocks per game) to give the Cardinal solid net play.
Barboza led the team with 5.11 points per game. While most of those came way of the kill, she also tallied points via the serve (Pac-10 leading 0.44 sapg) and blocks (0.69 bpg).
All four freshmen on the roster were named to Volleyball Magazine's FAB 50 list.
Depth at outside hitter. Stanford lost the services of All-American and four-time All-Pac-10 selection Kristin Richards. All she did last season was post 397 kills (3.78 kpg) and accumulated 1,820 kills during her Stanford career. Look for highly-regarded freshman Alix Klineman to make an immediate impact at the outside for the Cardinal.
A demanding schedule that includes 13 opponents (a total of 19 matches) that participated in last season's NCAA Tournament.
