Two Current, 10 Former Huskies to Row at World Championships

Aug. 8, 2007

SEATTLE - Husky rowing is going strong, even though school is not in session.

Twelve University of Washington athletes, including current men's team rowers Rob Gibson and Roko Svast and 10 former Huskies, will compete later this month at the World Rowing Championships.

The UW contingent, which represents three countries, is comprised of two women and 10 men. They will vie for titles when the FISA World Championships take place Aug. 26-Sept. 2 in Munich, Germany.

The Canadian National Team roster includes two UW men. Rob Gibson (Kingston, Ontario) completed his junior season at UW in June as part of the national championship varsity eight. He competes in Canada's four without coxswain along with Peter Dembicki who lettered for the Huskies from 2000-02.

Another current Husky, sophomore Roko Svast (Split, Croatia), is a member of the Croatian men's eight. Svast helped the UW freshman eight to a bronze-medal performance at the 2007 IRA Championships.

The Croatia squad also includes Ante Kusurin (Zagreb, Croatia), who will row in the double sculls. He served as the UW team captain in 2006.

Eight former UW rowers are listed on the 94-athlete United States' National Team roster.

The U.S. will have 26 crews competing in Germany. Six of those crews will be powered by Huskies, including the women's eight that features coxswain Marry Whipple (Sacramento, Calif.) and Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash./Newport). Those two helped the U.S. win the gold medal at the 2006 world championships.

Whipple and Mickelson helped the U.S. eight capture the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. They capped their collegiate careers in 2002 by leading UW to the varsity eight national championship.

Mickelson will be busy at the championships as she is also scheduled to row in the women's pair alongside Megan Cooke. Those two were fourth-place finishers in the pair at the 2006 world regatta.

Last fall, Mickelson was the recipient of the 2006 USRowing Female Athlete of the Year award. Former Huskies swept the honor as Brett Newlin was the Male Athlete of the Year. He completed his UW career in 2005.

Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.) is scheduled to row in the men's eight for the USA. Also in that crew is Brodie Buckland (Olympia, Wash.). Newlin competed in the four at last year's championships, finishing fourth.

The U.S. men's four features two former Huskies. Sam Burns (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) completed his UW career in 2004 and Matt Deakin (San Franciso, Calif.) finished in 2002.

Former Husky Kyle Larson (Mount Vernon, Wash.) will row in the men's pair event with Jason Read. Larson was the UW men's team captain in 2005.

Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.), a 2005 Husky graduate, is in the U.S. men's four witout coxswain. The native of Peru gained his U.S. citizenship in 2006.

Another world championship competitor with UW ties is former varsity assistant coach Bryan Volpenhein who rows in the USA four without coxswain.

Last year, eight Huskies collected medals at the world championships.

Mickelson and Whipple won golds with the U.S. women's eight. Deakin and Lanzone captured bronze medals with the U.S. men's eight. Gibson, Will Crothers, Max Lang and Chris Aylard were bronze medalists with Canada's men's four.
