Aug. 9, 2007
Berkeley - The California men's soccer team was selected 13th in the College Soccer News' preseason national rankings. The Golden Bears, who look to defend their 2006 Pac-10 Championship this year, were the second highest Pac-10 team in the poll. UCLA, last season's NCAA finalist, garnered the top spot.
Besides the Bruins, Cal will square off against four other ranked opponents in 2007 - No. 5 Santa Clara, No. 17 Washington, No. 23 Towson and No. 25 San Diego State. Reigning national champion UC Santa Barbara was picked No. 3 in the preseason poll.
In addition, Cal newcomer Davis Paul was selected by College Soccer News as one of the 100 Freshmen From Coast To Coast To Keep An Eye On. Paul was named a 2006 NSCAA Youth All-American. He also played on the Arsenal FC club that won three national titles in as many years. The freshman was selected to the West Coast High School Classic Best 11 all-tournament team.
Paul is one member of Cal's 16th-ranked recruiting class, according to College Soccer News. Other highly-regarded newcomers are Servando Carrasco and A.J. Soares, who both played with the San Diego Surf Soccer Club; goalkeeper Jordan Bethke, who played for the Pateadores soccer club of Southern California; and Andrew Wiedeman who played with the Cal North and Regional IV ODP teams and captained his most recent team.
The Bears open their season against the University of San Diego on Friday, Aug. 31, at 3 p.m. in San Diego. The home opener for Cal will be the following week, as the Bears will be joined by Stanford, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in the adidas Cal Legacy Classic. Cal will face Penn at Edwards Stadium Friday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m. and Wisconsin Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 p.m.
