Aron Baynes Shines at World Univerisity Games

BANGKOK, Thailand - Washington State center Aron Baynes played well for the second straight game, but his native Australia fell 74-62 to Israel in men's basketball at the World University Games, Friday.

Baynes tied for team-high honors with 14 points and added a game-high six rebounds. He also recorded four blocks. The Cairns (pronounced CANS) native is averaging 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds through the first two games of competition.

Israel ran out to a 14-2 lead before Australia closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run to cut its deficit to 16-11. The game remained closed until the final five minutes of the third quarter when Israel used a 10-4 spurt to take a 49-40 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Australia fell to 0-2 with the loss and will place Angola in a second phase game at 7 p.m. PDT, Saturday. Washington State guard Thomas Abercrombie and New Zealand (1-1) will begin the second phase with a 1:45 a.m. PDT tip, Sunday.
