Aug. 10, 2007
With the addition of Cardinal sophomore Ali Riley to the New Zealand World Cup team two days ago, it has set up a match between Riley and former Cardinal standout goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. The U.S.-New Zealand match is set to be played April 12th at 10:00 AM PST at Soldier Field in Chiacgo, and will be televised on ESPN2.
Barnhart, who has three caps for the US, was one of three goalkeepers named to the roster. The US Women's National Team is the current Olympic champion and also holds the number one world ranking.
Riley, who was recently named to the New Zealand World Cup roster is one of six forwards selected to the squad. Riley competed for New Zealand at the U-20 Women's World Cup last summer and has since been training with the full Women's National Team. Riley's father, a professor at UCLA, was born in New Zealand and Riley holds dual citizenship.
The 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup will take place September 10-30th in five different Chinese cities. The US opens the tournament against North Korea on September 11th and New Zealand plays their first match against Brazil.
