Sun Devils Hold Annual Camp T Scrimmage

The annual Sun Devil footballscrimmage took place on a picture perfect afternoon in front of 4,000 fans atCamp Tontozona. It was head coach Dennis Erickson's first chance to see his teamin a full pad scrimmage, and he had to be happy with some of the offensive starshe saw.

 

The running game, whichfigures to be a strength this season, did not disappoint, as both Ryan Torain(Shawnee Mission, Kan.) and Keegan Herring (Phoenix, Ariz.) wowed the crowd.Torain picked up 60 yards on eight carries, while Herring had 50 yards on eightcarries. Herring also turned in perhaps the best play of the afternoon, weavingin and out of traffic and dodging defenders during a spectacular 36-yard run.Sophomore Jarrell Woods, a transfer from West L.A. College, scored the firsttouchdown of the day, a 30-yard sprint up the middle to the end zone.

 

Freshman wide receiver KerryTaylor (Chandler, Ariz.) was the day's offensive MVP, hauling in five receptionsfor 85 yards. Sophomore Kyle Williams (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had three catches for31 yards and also had a 40-yard punt return. Thirteen different receivers caughtpasses, including tight end Brent Miller (Phoenix, Ariz.), who caught a 14-yardscoring strike from Rudy Carpenter.

 

Carpenter (Westlake, Calif.)threw for 116 yards with a touchdown. He completed the final five passes hethrew, capped off by the TD to Miller. He was also intercepted by Jon Hargis(Mesa, Ariz.), who came up with the pick after Jonathan English (River Ridge,La.) batted the ball at the line of scrimmage. Danny Sullivan (Los Gatos,Calif.) threw for 60 yards.

 

Luis Vasquez (Gales Ferry,Conn.) and Bo Moos (Eugene, Ore.) each recorded a sack for the Sun Devildefense, which also featured several big hits.

 

In the kicking game, ZachRichards (Phoenix, Ariz.) was 3-4 on field goals, with all three makes comingfrom 47 yards out. Thomas Weber (Downey, Calif.) was 2-4, hitting from 32 and 47yards. Weber also punted four times, averaging 48.5 yards a boot. JonathanJohnson also punted twice, averaging 40.5 yards a kick.

 

The Sun Devils will return toTempe later this week, and will hold another scrimmage at Sun Devil Stadium onFriday, August 17th at 7 o'clock.
