Senior quarterback John David Booty threw a pair of short touchdown passes and freshman tailback Joe McKnight returned a punt 74 yards for another score to highlight the USC football team's first intrasquad scrimmage of 2007 fall camp on Sunday (Aug. 12) under the lights at the Coliseum.

Booty, who was 7-of-14 overall for 53 yards, hit senior tight end Fred Davis for a 2-yard score and then found junior wide receiver Patrick Turner for a 4-yard TD on successive series early in the 78-play scrimmage. McKnight had 120 all-purpose yards on 6 touches.

The Trojans had 2 other scoring passes, a 50-yarder from senior quarterback Michael McDonald to redshirt freshman walk-on fullback Cooper Stephenson and a 9-yard hookup between a pair of freshmen on the scrimmage's final play as quarterback Aaron Corp hit wide receiver Ronald Johnson. McDonald was 1-of-2 overall, Corp was 4-of-4 for 49 yards and sophomore quarterback Mark Sanchez was 4-of-8 for 29 yards, but threw an interception.

Junior placekicker David Buehler nailed a 49-yard field goal on his only attempt.

There were a number of other long plays. Senior tailback Chauncey Washington gained 78 yards on his only carry, sophomore tailback Stafon Johnson had a 36-yard run and Ronald Johnson returned kickoffs for 53 and 52 yards.

Defensively, the Trojans recorded 8 sacks, junior defensive tackle Fili Moala returned a fumble 20 yards and freshman safety Marshall Jones ran back an interception 26 yards. Junior walk-on cornerback Jim Abbott blocked a pair of punts, returning the first 25 yards for a TD and walk-on freshman cornerback Daniel Harper returned the other for a 20-yard score.

A pair of linebackers-junior Kaluka Maiava and freshman Malcolm Smith-each had 5 tackles.

'Overall, it was a ragged scrimmage,' said seventh-year head coach Pete Carroll. 'We weren't as sharp as we wanted to be. But we worked hard, got in some good work and everyone got to play. Some of our young players looked real good.

'We had some trouble with our pass protection and the quarterbacks weren't sharp, but there was a lot of pressure from the defense.'

Five-time defending Pac-10 champion USC opens its 2007 season against Idaho in the Coliseum on Sept. 1.

The Trojans will hold a free public scrimmage in the Coliseum on Aug. 22 at 7:15 p.m.
