Aug. 14, 2007
BERKELEY, Calif. - The California women's soccer team has been tabbed to finish third in the Pac-10 in 2007 by the conference coaches. UCLA was chosen as the favorite to win the Pac-10 title, and Stanford was selected as the runner-up.
The Golden Bears recorded an overall record of 12-5-5 in 2006 and placed sixth in the Pac-10 with a 3-3-3 mark. Cal welcomes back seven starters and benefits from the experience of six seniors. The team is under the direction of Neil McGuire, who arrived in Berkeley after serving as the head coach at Texas Tech the last two seasons.
UCLA, which reached the national semifinals in 2006, has earned at least a share of the Pac-10 title four consecutive years. The Bruins received 75 points, including five first-place votes. Stanford and Cal earned the remaining first-place votes with three and two, respectively.
Stanford finished second in the poll, garnering 72 points, six ahead of third-place Cal, which received 66 points. USC held the fourth spot with 58 points, while 2006 Pac-10 runner-up Oregon earned 47 points, good enough for fifth. Washington State finished with 35 points, followed by Arizona State, which came in seventh with 32 points, and Arizona, which grabbed 29 points. Washington finished ninth in the voting, receiving 27 votes, and Oregon State rounded out the poll with nine points.
Last year, the Pac-10 received four bids to the NCAA Tournament, with Conference Champion UCLA advancing to the College Cup for the fourth straight season. The Bruins' run ended when they lost to North Carolina, 2-0. Stanford advanced to the third round of the tournament, and Cal and USC made it to the second round before being eliminated. The Pac-10 as a whole posted a 73-35-10 (.661) record against Division I non-conference opponents, including postseason competition.
The 2007 Pac-10 season begins Aug. 24, when the Cal travels to UC Davis for an 11 a.m. exhibition game.
Following are the results of the preseason coaches' poll. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams (points 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, first place votes in parentheses):
