Stanford Lands No. 2 Spot in AVCA Preseason Poll

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's volleyball team came in at No. 2 today, when the American Volleyball Coaches Association released its annual preseason pool. The Cardinal began last season at No. 4 in the AVCA poll, and finished the year at No. 2. Stanford has started the season in the top-five five of the last six years.
The Cardinal, last year's NCAA runner-up, returns nine letterwinners and six starters to the court this year, including All-Americans Cynthia Barboza, Bryn Kehoe and Foluke Akinradewo. Stanford's set of four newcomers, which includes Gatorade National Player of the Year Alix Klineman, is top-ranked in the nation.
Defending National Champion Nebraska took the top spot in the poll, while Penn State, Texas and UCLA rounded out the top-five. Five Pac-10 squads made the top-25.
Stanford and the five other Bay Area volleyball programs, including No. 12 California and No. 24 Santa Clara, will participate in Bay Area Volleyball Media Day next Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Scott's Seafood in Palo Alto. Stanford will also host an Intersquad Scrimmage and Booster Barbecue on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m. Admission to the scrimmage is free and will be held at Maples Pavilion. The Barbecue is $15 for Quick Set Members and $20 for non-members. RSVP to Cobey Shoji at email@example.com.
