No. 12 Cal Volleyball to Host Free Scrimmage Saturday
Aug. 16, 2007
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 12-ranked California women's volleyball team will be hosting a free scrimmage/practice this Saturday, Aug. 18, at 3 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears return four starters from last year's squad that finished 22-10 overall (9-9 in the Pac-10) and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.
Included in the group of returnees is senior outside hitter Angie Pressey, a three-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection and 2006 All-American. Cal also features senior middle hitter Ellen Orchard and junior outside hitter/middle hitter Morgan Beck, both honorable mention All-Pac-10 picks last season; and sophomore Hana Cutura, a member of the 2006 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.
The Bears will also showcase four freshmen this Saturday - Carli Lloyd, a 5-11 setter from Bonsall; Caitlyn Murphy, a 5-10 defensive specialist/libero/outside hitter from Roseville; Meagan Schmitt, a 5-9 defensive specialist/libero from Kentfield and Maria Zizka, a 5-9 setter from Oakland.
Lloyd comes to the Bears with impressive credentials out of Fallbrook Union High School, where she was one of the nation's top high school setters and the 2006-07 CIF Player of the Year. Also an outstanding track and field athlete, Lloyd competed in the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump as a prep athlete. A four-year member of Volleyball magazine's Fab 50, she enters Cal competing with junior Bryte Nielson for the privilege/challenge of replacing four-year starter Samantha Carter as the Bears' primary setter.
Murphy out of Granite Bay High School, and Schmitt from Redwood High School, will both be vying for playing time as back row specialists in their first year with the Bears, while Zizka, from Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School, adds depth to Cal's setter position.
The Bears, led by ninth-year head coach Rich Feller, will open their 2007 season hosting the Cal Molten Classic (Cal, Idaho, Northeastern and Florida International) Aug. 24-25 at Haas Pavilion. Cal then travels to the Colorado Tournament (Cal, Central Florida, UNC Wilmington, Colorado) Aug. 31-Sept. 2 in Boulder, Colo., before hosting the Golden Bear Invitational (Cal, Utah State, Eastern Kentucky, Minnesota) Sept 7-8 at Haas Pavilion.
Among the Bears' non-conference foes ranked is Big 10 powerhouse Minnesota, who is No. 9 in the AVCA preseason poll and will be Cal's opponent in the final match of the Golden Bear Invitational at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8.
