Turner Catches 2 Of Booty's 3 TD Passes To Highlight USC Intrasquad Scrimmage
Aug. 16, 2007
Senior quarterback John David Booty threw 3 touchdown passes, including a pair to junior wide receiver Patrick Turner, to highlight the USC football team's second intrasquad scrimmage of 2007 fall camp on Thursday (Aug. 17) under the lights at the Coliseum.
Booty hit Turner on 5- and 21-yard scoring passes, which sandwiched Booty's 28-yard TD strike to senior tight end Fred Davis. Booty was 11-of-17 overall for 173 yards, while Turner caught 5 passes overall for 62 yards.
USC's other touchdowns in the 78-play scrimmage came on a 92-yard kickoff return by sophomore cornerback Vincent Joseph, a 12-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Mitch Mustain (who must redshirt this season after transferring from Arkansas) to freshman fullback Jordan Campbell and a 3-yard run by freshman tailback Broderick Green, who had 60 rushing yards on 7 carries overall. Junior placekicker David Buehler added a 34-yard field goal.
Freshmen linebackers Chris Galippo (6 tackles) and Malcolm Smith (5 tackles) topped the defense, aided by 4 tackles each from junior linebacker Rey Maualuga, Joseph and fellow soph cornerback Shareece Wright and freshman safety Marshall Jones. Senior linebacker Keith Rivers recovered a fumble and sophomore safety Will Harris intercepted a pass.
'This was a good night for us,' said seventh-year head coach Pete Carroll. 'I was real pleased. We were crisp and a lot of good things happened. Booty was really sharp, Turner was on the money, Davis looked good, our offensive line pass protected well and Broderick Green really did some stuff and was hard to tackle. And the defense continued to play well.'
Five-time defending Pac-10 champion USC opens its 2007 season against Idaho in the Coliseum on Sept. 1.
The Trojans will hold a free public scrimmage in the Coliseum next Wednesday (Aug. 22) at 7:15 p.m.
