The Washington men's basketball team embarks on an off-season trip to Greece, beginning Aug. 27. The Huskies return from their 11-day, five-game journey on Sept. 6. Incoming recruits are not allowed to participate, so UW brings a nine-player roster to Greece. All five opponents are professional competitors in the second division of the Greek League. The Huskies play two games in Thessaloniki, one in Trikalla and two in Athens.

Tourist Season
Several historic sites are on the itinerary for the Huskies, including the Byzantine Museum and royal tombs in Thessaloniki along with the Acropolis, Olympic Stadium and Temple of Zeus in Athens. The last full day (Sept. 5) features a cruise to the islands of Poros, Hydra and Aegina.

Academic Pursuit
Games and tours aren't the only thing on the agenda. The Huskies are taking advantage of the trip to learn more about one of the most famous Greeks, Socrates. The Husky players are taking a classics course with James Clauss, the former chair of the UW classics department and incoming director of the Honors Program. Clauss will be teaching the course the week prior to the team's departure and will continue his instruction in Greece as a member of the travel party. Along with Socrates, the Huskies will study architecture and Greek history. This is believed to be the first academic class conducted in conjunction with a foreign trip by a UW athletic team.

Quoting Coach Lorenzo Romar
'Ten more days of practice and five more games will help this young team tremendously. We can work the kinks out. We will not be able to have our freshmen with us. It gives our returning guys an opportunity to establish identity with a different team this year, especially red-shirts like Joel Smith, Tim Morris and Joe Wolfinger.'

Fast Fact
The trip to Greece is the first foreign tour for the Washington men since they traveled to France and Germany in August of 1998. That Husky squad, featuring Todd MacCulloch, posted a 2-3 record against French and German professional teams.

Board Meeting
Washington led the Pac-10 in rebound margin in 2007, out-boarding its opponents by nine per game (38.2 to 29.3). That + 9.1 margin ranked No. 2 nationally, behind only Vermont (+ 9.6). The Huskies won the board battle in 30 of 32 games, coming up short at California (Jan. 13) and at Arizona (Feb. 3). Jon Brockman, now a junior, led the conference with 9.6 rebounds per game, including 18 double-digit efforts. Brockman had a Pac-10 leading 15 double-doubles.

Pac-10 Honors
Washington forward Jon Brockman was selected to the nine-player, first-team 2007 All-Pac-10 Conference team. Brockman led the Pac-10 in rebounds (9.6 rpg), ranked No. 3 in field goal percentage (55.0%) and No. 12 in scoring (14.2 ppg). Forward Quincy Pondexter was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 Freshman team selection.
