Two Bruins to Compete in U.S. Amateur

UCLA's Erik Flores and Philip Francis will compete in the 107th U.S.Amateur Championship, Aug. 20-26 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The U.S. Amateur format features 36 holes of stroke play on Aug. 20-21 withthe top 64 players earning a berth in the single-elimination match playdraw.

Flores, 20, earned Second-Team All-America honors in 2006 when he led theBruins with a 72.1 scoring average. He also earned Freshman of the Yearhonors from the Pac-10.

Francis, 18, is considered by many experts to be the top junior player inthe incoming class of 2007. He has won dozens of amateur events in hisjunior career, and this summer played in three PGA events on sponsor'sexemptions.

Both players will be competing in their first U.S. Amateur Championship.
