Berkeley - Former California softball standout, Kristina Thorson, was named the National Pro Fastpitch Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. Her teammate, Chelsea Spencer, another prominent former Golden Bear, earned league all-star honors as well. Both are members of the Philadelphia Force.
Thorson, who pitched at Cal from 2003-06, boasted a record of 14-5, including 12 complete games and a no-hitter against Team China. Her 14 wins were second-most in the league as well. Thorson tallied 116.2 innings of work, allowing just 20 earned runs with a 1.22 earned run average (second-lowest in the NPF). Thorson was a two-time All-American and the 2006 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year. She finished her career at Cal with 102 wins.
Considered one of the most consistent shortstops in National Pro Fastpitch, Spencer led the league in batting average early in the season, before finishing with a .333 average - third-highest in the NPF. She led the Force with five home runs, triples and walks. A member of the Force since 2005, Spencer played in 277 career games at Cal, and earned Pac-10 all-conference honors twice.
