Stanford Women's Basketball Announces 2007-08 Schedule

Aug. 22, 2007

STANFORD, Calif. - The defending Pac-10 Champion Stanford women's basketball team can look forward to logging plenty of miles this November before settling in at home for the upcoming season, as head coach Tara VanDerveer announced the team's 2007-08 schedule today.

The Cardinal women (29-5, 17-1 Pac-10 in 2006-07) will host one exhibition and 13 regular-season contests for a total of 14 dates at Maples Pavilion in 2007-08, starting with an exhibition game against Chico State on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. Stanford has put together an 83-7 record in its last 90 contests at home, including a 15-3 mark on the home court last season.

Stanford traditionally plays one of the nation's toughest schedules, and this season will be no different, as 11 listed opponents earned berths in either the NCAA Tournament or WNIT last season. The Cardinal will not only face the task of defending its 2007 Pac-10 regular-season and tournament titles against a Pac-10 conference that sent five teams to the postseason in 2006-07, but also face off against both NCAA Championship game participants in Rutgers and Tennessee.

The 2007-08 regular season kicks off with a road trip to New England as the Cardinal take on the Yale Bulldogs to tip things off Nov. 9 before heading to New Jersey to battle 2007 national finalist Rutgers Nov. 11. The game against the Scarlet Knights is scheduled to be televised on ESPN.

Stanford's November road show continues a week later as the women travel to Salt Lake City to take on 2007 WNIT participants the Utah Utes Nov. 18. The team then escapes the cooling Northern California weather over Thanksgiving break, packing the warm-weather gear for a trip to the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands for the 2007 edition of the Paradise Jam. The Cardinal, part of the 'Island' group of the St. Thomas division, will take on perennial powers Connecticut (Nov. 22) and Old Dominion (Nov. 24) before closing out the tournament Sunday, Nov. 25 against a team to be determined from the 'Reef' group, which consists of Duke, Purdue, and Temple.

Upon its return to the mainland United States, the team finally gets the chance to settle in at home for six of its next seven contests as a 7 p.m. contest against San Francisco on Nov. 28 begins a three-game homestand that also includes Sunday games against UC Davis on Dec. 2 and NCAA Tournament participant Baylor on Dec. 16. A quick trip to Albuquerque for a Dec. 18 contest opposite another 2007 NCAA Tournament team, New Mexico, will be immediately followed by a second three-game set at home, beginning with a Dec. 22 battle against defending NCAA champions the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, who are coming off of a 34-3 season in 2006-07.

The homestand continues through the end of December, as the Cardinal open Pac-10 play Dec. 28 against Washington State, and conclude the weekend Dec. 30 against the Washington Huskies.

Stanford splits the month of January evenly between home and road Pac-10 games, traveling to Los Angeles for contests at UCLA (Jan. 4) and USC (Jan. 6), returning home to host Oregon State (Jan. 10) and Oregon (Jan. 12), then heading to the desert for a Jan. 17 game at Arizona followed by a Pac-10 Tournament Championship rematch against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Jan. 19.

The Cardinal then stay home for another three-game stand, facing off against the California Golden Bears, the only team to defeat Stanford in Pac-10 play last season, on Jan. 25 before hosting return dates against USC on Jan. 31 and UCLA on Feb. 2.

Following the UCLA game, Stanford hits the crucial home stretch of its regular season, playing six of its final eight games on the road, beginning with a 20-minute drive south to take on the Santa Clara Broncos in non-conference action Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. The Cardinal then resume Pac-10 action with a trip north for games at Oregon (Feb. 7) and Oregon State (Feb. 9) before returning to Maples Pavilion for its final regular-season homestand.

A Valentine's Day conflict with Arizona State starts off the home weekend, closing out with Feb. 16's Senior Day celebration against Arizona.

A bus ride to Berkeley to battle California on Feb. 23 precedes the final weekend of the regular season, which will see the Cardinal head up to Washington to battle the Huskies Feb. 29, then close out the season in Pullman against Washington State on March 2.

The 2008 Pac-10 Women's Basketball Tournament will once again be held at HP Pavilion in San Jose, beginning March 7 with the title game set to take place March 10.

In addition, Maples Pavilion will serve as a host site for the first and second rounds of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. TV games will be announced at a later date.
