Soni Posts Second Fastest 2007 100m Breast Time In World

Aug. 23, 2007

Junior Rebecca Soni, a two-time NCAA champion, posted second-place finishes in the 100m and 200m breaststroke while senior All-American teammate Hayley McGregory reached the final of the 100m back during the Japan International meet this week in Chiba, Japan, the final major international swim meet during the 2007 season.

Soni posted a personal-best 1:06.94 in the 100m breast, finishing second behind only world record holder Leisel Jones (1:06.15) of Australia. Soni's 2:23.36 was another personal best and also second only to Jones (2:21.45) in the 200m breast.

Soni's time in the 200m breast makes her the second fastest in the world this year while her 100m time makes her third fastest. Her 100 time also makes her only the sixth woman ever to go under 1:07.

McGregory, who like Soni won a U.S. National title earlier this summer, was fifth in the 100m back in 1:01.24.

Soni is the second swimmer coached by second-year USC coach Dave Salo to crack the 1:07 barrier in the 100m breast (the other being Jessica Hardy).
