Aug. 24, 2007
Tiburon, Calif. - Five former Bruin men's tennis players have been selected to represent UCLA in the inaugural Hennessy Funds Alumni Legends Cup, Sept. 7-9, at the Tiburon Peninsula Club (TPC) in the Bay Area. The event, which also features USC, Stanford and Cal, is billed as a new beginning in the storied rivalry between these four Pac-10 powerhouses.
Making up the UCLA team will be Zack Fleishman (1999), Justin Gimelstob (1995-96), Brian Garrow (1987-89), Brad Pearce (1985-86) and Jim Landes (1974). The UCLA squad will square off against USC's team of Andrew Park, Brett Hansen-Dent, Brian MacPhie, Rick Leach and Bob Lutz. That match is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m.
Following the UCLA/USC matchup, Stanford's Sam Warburg, Paul Goldstein, Alex O'Brien, Scott Davis and Roscoe Tanner will take on Cal's John-Paul Fruttero, David Smith, Matt Lucena, Steve Devries and John Hubbell. That match is tentatively scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Saturday's winners will meet in Sunday's final. Each dual match consists of two doubles and five singles matches.
Immediately after the Alumni Legends Cup final on Sept. 9, fans will be treated to a special exhibition, as 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras will take on rising American Sam Querrey.
A portion of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the men's tennis programs at Cal, Stanford, UCLA and USC, as well as Athletes for Life, a non-profit organization providing guidance and leadership programs to young athletes throughout California since 1989.
