No. 12 Cal Volleyball Defeats Idaho, 3-0, in Season-Opener

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Starting the 2007 season off on a strong note in front of an opening night crowd of 1,072, the No. 12-ranked Cal women's volleyball team (1-0) defeated Idaho, 3-0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-15) during the first evening of the Cal Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears were paced by sophomore outside hitter Hana Cutura's 10 kills, and an impressive .533 hitting percentage (8k, 0e, 15att.) by junior outside hitter Morgan Beck. Cal was also powered by senior captain Ellen Orchard's nine total blocks (one solo, eight block assists).
The Bears' win was their eighth consecutive season-opening victory, and Cal has now won 12-straight regular season tournament matches carrying over from the 2005 season.
In the earlier 4:30 p.m. tournament match, Florida International topped Northeastern, 3-2 (21-30, 30-22, 25-30, 30-21, 15-11), led by sophomore Olga Vergun' 28 kills and .449 hitting percentage (28k, 6e, 49att.).
'It was great just to get the first match over with,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'I was really pleased we were able to play a lot of people without losing our rhythm. Our team is so deep we were able to use a lot of our players without losing our intensity.'
In their first career matches for the Bears, freshman setter Carli Lloyd finished with 24 assists and a team-high eight digs, while freshman libero Caitlyn Murphey had six digs and a team-high three service aces.
Cal out-hit the Vandals, .253 to .000, and took advantage of 14 Idaho service errors. The Vandals were paced by Haley Larsen's 10 kills.
Cal will next host Northeastern at noon on Saturday, Aug. 25, while Florida International and Idaho battle in the other noon match at Haas Pavilion. Idaho and Northeastern will then face each other at 4:30 p.m. before Florida International and Cal conclude the tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday.
