No. 6 USC Opens 2007 Season With 3-0 Sweep Of Michigan State

LOS ANGELES - Senior All-America outside hitter Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland) collected a team-high 13 kills Friday as the No. 6 USC Women of Troy opened the 2007 regular season with a 3-0 victory (30-24, 30-23, 30-25) over the Michigan State Spartans in the Trojan Invitational at Galen Center. Kaczor hit .455 on the evening (13-3-22) and accounted for 16 points.

USC (1-0) outblocked Michigan State (0-1) by an 11-3 margin with seniors Bethany Johansen (Los Gatos) and Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga) and freshman Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach) securing two solo blocks each. Johansen and Copenhagen also had seven kills.

Ashley Schatzle led the Spartans with 15 kills and 16 digs while Katie Johnson added 12 kills. Opening night jitters were apparents as both teams combined for a total of 22 service errors.

A 5-0 run by the Trojans was the key in game one with USC leading, 16-15. Garrett capped the stretch with a solo block. In game two, USC pulled away again at 20-20 as kills by Kaczor and Copenhagen put the host team ahead for good.

With the score tied at 17-17 in game three, senior middle blocker Katelyn Bishop (Terre Haute, Ind.) posted back-to-back kills as the Trojans reeled off six straight points and the eventual sweep.

In earlier tournament action, St. John's swept Loyola Marymount, 3-0 (30-23, 30-19, 30-23). The Trojan Invitational concludes tomorrow with four matches: Michigan State vs. Loyola Marymount at 10 a.m., USC and St. John's at noon, St. John's and Michigan State at 5 p.m. and USC against Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m.
