Cal Volleyball Wins Molten Classic with 3-0 Victory Over Flordia International

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Led by tournament MVP Angie Pressey, the No. 12-ranked Cal women's volleyball team (3-0) captured the 2007 Cal Molten Classic with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-16, 30-21) victory over Florida International (2-1) Saturday night at Haas Pavilion. Senior outside hitter Pressey paced the Golden Bears with a match-high 15 kills and only had two errors in 21 attempts for a .619 hitting percentage against the Golden Panthers.

Other impressive performances in the tournament title match for Cal included fellow senior Ellen Orchard, with a match-high 10 total blocks (two solo), and freshman setter Carli Lloyd with 33 assists and six blocks. Orchard and Lloyd (tournament's Outstanding Setter) joined Pressey as members of the Cal Molten Classic All-Tournament team. The Bears have now won 11 regular-season tournaments in the past six years, and Pressey has now been all-tournament in seven consecutive tournament competitions. She finished the three matches with 31 kills.

Cal captured the tournament by defeating Idaho 3-0 Friday night, and defeating Northeastern 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 30-15) Saturday in a noon match. Other Saturday matches included Florida International topping Idaho, 3-0 (30-22, 30-15, 22-30, 30-21) at noon. In the 4:30 third-place match, Idaho defeated Northeastern, 3-0.

'Angie is playing at a very high level for us right now,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'She is truly one of the best players in the nation. She just does everything on the court. There is nothing she doesn't do well.'

Cal will next attempt to capture another tournament when it visits the Colorado Invitational, Aug. 31-Sept. 2 in Boulder, Colo. The Golden Bears then host another tournament at Haas Pavilion (Utah State, Eastern Kentucky and No. 9 Minnesota) Sept. 7-8.
