PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State volleyball team won the Baden Cougar Challenge Tournament Saturday with a 3-1 win over Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon and a 3-0 win over South Dakota State that evening.

The Cougars move to a 3-0 record after defeating the visiting Jackrabbits 30-28, 30-17, 30-21. Portland finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record while SDSU was third at 1-2 and Northern Colorado fourth at 0-3.

'It feels good to be able to win three games in front of our home crowd and our athletes have worked very, very hard and to have them rewarded for their efforts,' WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'We still have a lot of work to do but it is nice to get off to a great start and to see our athletes performing so well.'

In the match against South Dakota State, WSU's Tara West, the tournament MVP, had 16 kills with only one error in 28 total attacks for a .536 hitting percentage. Other WSU all-tournament selections included Brittany Johnson (13 kills, .303, four aces) and Maureen Perez (45 assists). Adetokunbo Faleti added 12 kills while Jackie Albright had seven kills and three blocks. Stephanie Weishaar, playing libero, contributed 17 digs.

The Jacks were dealt a tough blow in the second game when leading scorer Mackenzie Angner left the match with an injury to her right ankle. Emily Rooney stepped up and tagged 12 kills (.409) and three blocks and all-tournament selection Samantha Pearson had a match-high 25 digs. Amy Anderson, another all-tournament nod, had six kills and three blocks. SDSU did not have a service ace.

'Tara's performance was excellent,' Heffernan said. 'Not only is she doing a great job offensively but she really runs our team in the front row. She know exactly what to do against the opponent defense and she works very closely with Ken (associate head coach Ko) and is really in command up there. She is a great leader for us at the net. It is nice to see her put up the type of offensive numbers to go along with her abilities as a defender.'

West, a senior from Perth, Australia, averaged 4.50 kills per game, hitting .452 for the three matches, and 0.90 blocks per game.

'It's really great for me to come out and be healthy and fit right from the get-go,' West said. 'I think our team is doing an awesome job this year. I couldn't hit the balls I hit unless I didn't have a good setter and didn't have good passers behind me.'

Earlier in the day, WSU moved to a 2-0 record after defeating Northern Colorado (0-3) with scores of 30-23, 30-20, 27-30, 30-22.

In the first match Saturday, WSU's West had a match-high 13 kills while Albright and Johnson each added 12 more kills. West also had a match-high five blocks with Johnson and Brittany Tillman each adding another four blocks. Kelly Hyder had 27 digs. Northern Colorado's Dulcie Stone and Kenzie Shreeve each had 12 kills and Abby Mayne contributed 21 digs and a pair of aces. Taylor Smith, Ashley Lichtenberg and Allison Raguse each had four blocks.

Washington State hosts Idaho Tuesday night at Bohler Gym and then travels to Spokane to take on Gonzaga at the Martin Center Wednesday.
