Nine Pac-10 teams won their season openers as the league combined for a 21-6 (.778) record in the opening weekend of action... All league teams will participate in tournament action again this week, with ARIZONA STATE and USC the lone Pac-10 teams hosting tournaments... STANFORD opened the season with a win over No. 19 Long Beach State and continues to take on Top 25 foes this week with matches against No. 12 San Diego, No. 9 Minnesota and No. 23 Ohio... Five Pac-10 teamare among the AVCA Top 25 - No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 USC, No. 5 UCLA, No. 8 WASHINGTON, and No. 11 CALIFORNIA.
ARIZONA senior Katie Jackels posted a school record 37 digs against Saint Mary's, breaking the previous mark of 33 digs set by Anita Moss on Nov. 4, 1983. Freshman Paige Weber posted 144 assists for a 13.09 assists per game average in the first three matches. Junior Randy Goodenough led the Wildcats with a career-high 26 kills on a .328 hitting percentage against Saint Mary's. Weber and Randy Goodenough were named to the 2007 Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team... ARIZONA STATE senior libero Sydney Donahue had 81 digs in the opening weekend, giving her 1,826 career digs, moving her from fifth-place to fourth in the Pac-10 career list and just 245 shy of tying the all-time record of 2,071... CALIFORNIA OH Angie Pressey earned MVP honors at the Cal Molten Classic. She led Cal with a match-high 15 kills and only had two errors in 21 attempts for a .619 hitting percentage against Florida International in the championship match. Pressey has earned All-Tournament honors in each of the last seven regular season tournaments in which Cal has played. The Golden Bears have won 11 in-season tournaments over the last six seasons. Senior MB Ellen Orchard tallied 26 total blocks in three matches, averaging 2.89 blocks per game... OREGON hit a combined .372 and did not drop a game in its three wins to capture the Oregon Kickoff Classic. Sonja Newcombe earned Classic MVP honors after posting 12 kills and hit .476 in the championship match against Kansas. Oregon set a new program record on Friday night against Idaho State, holding the Bengals to seven points in the first game, a new program record low since the start of rally scoring in 2001. Head coach Jim Moore is now 24-1 (.960) at Oregon in non-conference matches... OREGON STATE stunned No. 10 Hawai'i Sunday evening at the ASICS Rainbow Wahine Invitational by scores of 33-31, 30-21 and 30-26. The win marked the Beavers first win over a ranked opponent since 2005 when they beat 14th-ranked California on the road. Sophomore OH Rachel Rourke and freshman OH Jill Sawatzky were named to the all-tournament team. Rourke posted a pair of double-doubles and averaged 4.09 kills and 1.27 blocks in the three matches... STANFORD junior OH Cynthia Barboza led the Cardinal with 18 kills, hitting .484, with 10 digs in their win over Long Beach State. Six of Stanford's first seven non-conference opponents are ranked in this week's AVCA poll... Senior OH Rachell Johnson led UCLA to a split at the AVCA Showcase with a win over No. 21 Utah, but falling to top-ranked Nebraska. Johnson collected 26 kills (3.71 kpg) and hit .379 for the two matches... USC senior OPP Asia Kaczor was instrumental in guiding the Women of Troy to the Trojan Invitational title as she posted a .366 attack percentage, while posting 41 kills (4.10 kpg). Freshman MB Zoe Garrett was impressive in her debut as she collected 26 kills (2.60 kpg), hit .368, and posted 11 blocks (1.10 bpg)... The WASHINGTON offense appears to be in good hands as freshman S Jenna Hagglund has stepped in to replace All-American Courtney Thompson. Hagglund guided the Huskies to three wins in the Husky Classic as the team combined to hit .334 for the Classic as Hagglund dished out 131 assists (14.56 apg). Also making her debut was freshman OH Becky Perry as she piled up 39 kills (5.57 kpg) and hit .485 for the weekend... For the 16th time in 17 years, WASHINGTON STATE won it's season-opening match, this year by defeating Portland in three games. Senior MB Tara West tallied 45 kills (4.50 kpg), hit .452, and posted 0.90 blocks per game to earn MVP honors of the Baden Cougar Challenge.
