AROUND THE LEAGUE

Pac-10 women's soccer officially kicks off this weekend as nine teams take to the field Fri., Aug. 31, one on Sat., Sept. 1 ... A few games against ranked teams are on the docket as WASHINGTON faces (nr/nr/25/30 Marquette in its season-opener on Friday at the Milwaukee Cup ... STANFORD faces (16/16/15/10) Connecticut on Sun., Sept. 2 at the Boston Terrier Invitational, while UCLA will takes on (9/8/9/9) Texas at the Houston Tournament and OREGON STATE plays (4/4/7/4) Portland on Mon., Sept. 3 ... Speaking of nationally-ranked teams, the Pac-10 comes into the season with five of its 10 teams in the preseason polls, including the Bruins who lead the way with the No. 1 position in the TopDrawer poll ... The Pac-10 placed four players on SoccerBuzz' preseason All-America Elite-18 list, including three forwards from the Bruin squad ... Making the list were SR F/MF Danesha Adams, SO F Lauren Cheney and JR F Christina DiMartino ... From the Cardinal roster, SR D Rachel Buehler, a 2006 National Player of the Year finalist, also made the preseason cut ... Only the ACC (5) and the Big 12 (4) had at least four players on the Elite-18 squad ... The Pac-10 has loads of potential this season as it sent four teams to NCAA postseason play in 2006, and returns six of its first team All-Pac-10 performers and 11 of its second team All-Pac-10 performers ... Five squads are coming off of double-digit win seasons, including UCLA (21), Stanford (15), CALIFORNIA (12), OREGON (12) and USC (11) ... The league is also coming off a season in which it shined in non-conference play, totaling a record of 73-35-10 (.661) against all Division I opponents ... Look for strong offensive play as the Conference returns most of its Top-10 leaders in shots and goals ... Cheney finished with a 0.90 goals per game to rank atop the league as a freshman, followed closely by teammate Adams who topped out with a 0.63 average through 19 games ... Defensively, look for the Pac-10 to pick up right where it left off last season as three teams finished the year ranked nationally in shutout percentage, including USC (ninth), Stanford (10th) and California (24th).
